Turning PowerPoint into an Interactive PDF

Contributed by Don Modesto
EAP Faculty - Ybor Campus

PROBLEM
To distribute Powerpoints to students:
  1. allowing them to fill in blanks
  2. without allowing them to edit the Powerpoint file (to prevent confusion re: which is the teacher’s and which are students’ revisions)
  3. that they can print efficiently
  4. ie, four slides to a page so as not to waste paper (I was appalled once to see a student had printed a 30-slide Powerpoint one slide to a page)

SOLUTION
Google turned up PDFill (http://www.pdfill.com/). Downloaded, PDFill puts an option in your Powerpoint Print dialogue allowing you to “print” to a PDF file (which can then be uploaded to Blackboard.) In your Powerpoint presentation, you select Print and then choose PDFill, as below:

After that, you configure for the layout, color, etc.:

When you tell it to “print,” PDFill converts your Powerpoint into a PDF file. I’ve used it several times now, and it works as described.

ANNOTATE THE PDF
When students download and open the pdf file, they will have to click the Add Text icon in the tool bar in order to add text to the page. The implementation is a little clumsy, but it works. As below, there are several formatting choices on the floating Add Text toolbar.

POWERPOINT SHOW FORMAT
I have previously distributed Powerpoints as “Powerpoint Shows” (Save as, Save as type: Powerpoint Show) which open immediately to a full screen presentation with no opportunity to edit or, alas, print. This is fine should you choose to distribute your entire Powerpoint. I no longer do this. I save my lesson in a students’ version and then replace critical terms with blanks to encourage active learning and then, as above, save and distribute it as a PDF.

Escape Your Search Engine Filter Bubble

When you do a web search, the results are tailored to what the search engine thinks you would like to see based on your past internet history (past internet searches, things you 'liked' on Facebook, ads you've clicked, etc). While this 'customization' seems useful, it does raise the question, "what are you missing?"

The website Don't Bubble Us explains this phenomenon, as well as a solution.

Using Google+ Hangouts for Teaching

Google+ is the newcomer of the social media explosion. Aiming to marry the substance of real-world interactions with an online platform, Google+ uses Circles, Hangouts and Huddles to bring users together.

The Hangout feature can be a useful tool in education, as teachers can use the service to conduct virtual classrooms. A teacher can teach up to ten virtual classrooms at a time. Those ten receiving classrooms can each relay the stream to ten more classrooms each!

Use a Podcast to Enhance Your Course

A podcast is a digital media file that is distributed over the internet. These can be played via an internet browser, an iPod or a Smart Phone.

Podcasts are valuable resources for students in online and face-to-face courses. Professors can record their lectures and place them on their website. Students can then download the lecture and listen to it any time, day or night.

Are you interested in putting your lecture online? Faculty and Staff at HCC have access to a program called Camtasia. Camtasia allows you to record and edit your lectures and then publish them in a digital format. Tutorials on how to use Camtasia can be found here:http://citt.hccfl.edu/Tutorials.cfm?TopNum=1&SubTopic=Camtasia&AllResource=Camtasia. You can also contact the CITT for additional assistance in using Camtasia.

For further information on using podcasts to enhance your course, check out this article - www.educationonline.com/new-trends-podcasts - from Education Online.

How to Merge PowerPoint Presentations

Have two (or more) PowerPoint presentations that you would like to play as one presentation? Have slides from a presentation that you would like to add to another presentation? This can be done easily in PowerPoint 2007.

1. Open the PowerPoint presentation that you would like to appear first
2* Scroll to the last slide of your presentation. Click on this slide to make it
active, so that the slides you add will appear immediately after it.
3. On the Home tab, click ‘New Slide’
4. Select ‘Reuse Slides’ (last option)
5. On the right hand slide, a box will pop up. Click Browse and select “Browse
    File.”
6. Search for the next PowerPoint you would like to add to your lecture
7. The slides will populate in the box on the right hand side.
8. Click them in the order that you would like them to appear in your lecture.

*You can also add slides to the beginning or middle of a lecture following these same steps. Just make sure the slide they will immediately follow is highlighted in your original presentation.
